Earlier this year the liquid crystal community lost one of the true giants of the field, Professor P.G. DeGennes. Satyendra Kumar has kindly provided an obituary for Professor DeGennes that is included in this edition of Liquid Crystals Today. The obituary is reproduced with the permission of the Royal Society of Chemistry (first published in the July issue of Chemistry World).

In other news, Helen Gleeson has stepped down as the Associate Editor of LC Today and is replaced by Ingo Dierking (University of Manchester). Helen has worked tirelessly for the journal and I would like to thank her for her years of service and for all that she has done to usher the journal into the on-line age. I would also like to welcome Ingo to the board of LC Today.

Thank you also to Cécile Zakri who has provided this issue’s article on Carbon nanotubes and liquid crystalline phases.

Date: June 2007
